Win the next five - and then we'll make history

David Moyes says that he is looking forward to making "new history" at West Ham in the week when the club celebrate their 125th anniversary.

However the club's current manager maintains it is imperative that his team puts together a winning sequence before he can even think about doing that.

West Ham have won just two of their 12 Premier League matches since Moyes succeeded Manuel Pellegrini at the beginning of the year and will almost certainly need to win at least three of their remaining seven matches in order to stand a chance of avoiding relegation.

Yet Moyes is confident that West Ham can start to put points on the board soon - starting with tomorrow night's London derby against Chelsea.

"West Ham has fantastic history but what we want is new history and I want the chance to build new history, make new history, create something which gives us a feeling of hope for the future," he said during his pre-match presser.

"The big thing first though is to win our next four or five games and make sure we are a Premier League club. If we do that, then we can start building new history and I want to be the guy to do it.

"I have got a lot of ideas and thoughts where I want to take the club if I can do it, but I have to mention there have been some unbelievable managers and players at this club who are recognised worldwide."

Moyes - who watched Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-1 in their last Premier League outing - also feels that West Ham will benefit from having enjoyed an extra few days rest compared to their opponents, who played in the FA Cup at the weekend.

West Ham, of course, have been out of action since last Tuesday's 2-0 defeat at Tottenham. "It’s given us a chance to just settle down and not be going from one recovery straight into the next game," he suggested.

"I said before I think it was a bit unfair we had to play Tottenham two days after and they had a day longer [to rest], and to be fair Jose [Mourinho] agreed with that as well. It’s a little bit different for Frank [Lampard] and Chelsea because they had an FA Cup tie, and we wish we had been in the quarter-finals.

"We've had a week to get on with some more work, but also we’re in a bit of a game mode at the moment and have sort of adopted ‘let’s get the games played and finished and done if we can’.

"When I was here last time we beat Chelsea at home and the players had a good result against them this season, so we have to look at that as a real positive.

"But I was one of the fortunate ones that went to see Chelsea against Manchester City in midweek and undoubtedly we saw two very very good teams, two technically gifted teams and obviously a real good game as well."

With regards to squad selection, there was both good and bad news. "we’ve got Arthur [Masuaku] back, or trying to get back," confirmed Moyes. "He rolled his ankle just a couple of days before the start. He’s trained a little bit with the young players, so that’s getting him closer. Whether he'll be ok for tomorrow I’m not quite sure."

However the news regarding the injured duo of Sebastien Haller and Angelo Ogbonna suggests neither are likely to feature.

"They’re getting closer," said Moyes. "They’ve both been out on the grass joining in bits of training. We’re hopeful we can get them around the team. I’m not sure they're exactly ready yet, but they are getting closer. That’s all I can say."
