The opposition view: Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves fans - some of whom appear to have caught a dose of 'Villa-itus' from their pals up the road hence are misguidedly under the impression their team is considerably better than it actually is - couldn't quite work out why 'Nuno's' expensively-assembled XI were smashed all over the park by an ebullient West Ham in Stratford on Sunday night. Although at least one or two managed to figure it out in the latest edition of the OV...

"It was a poor team performance and poor individual performances. There were two incidents that summed up the night for me. In the first half Semedo ran with the ball into the final third, West Ham won the ball and broke down our right. They went passed Traore, Traore then made a half-hearted effort to get back before giving up leaving Boly facing two oncoming defenders. Poor teamwork. The second one also involved Boly. In the second half Boly was one-on-one with Masuaku. Boly basically stepped out of the way and let Masuaku stroll by him. Boly never got close to him. Those are just two but I could have picked on many from most players on the pitch. We were too slow in possession and too slow without the ball. We can't expect young players with virtually no first team experience to step up and change a game for us. It's not fair on them. As bad as we were, West Ham were as good. They looked like us over the last two seasons. They sat deep, turned possession over and hit us quickly. Antonio had the beating over our back three time and again. Bowen was also really good. Just goes to show there are some very good players in the Championship. It was the most prepared West Ham team I've seen in a while. Considering Moyes has been isolated the last few days in make you wonder if the two are related. I'm sure West Ham fans will be pondering that."

"Number one thing is the workrate has got to be upped 1000%. We are swanning around like the world owes us respect. West Ham played well (as they did in their previous game) but it was men against boys out there tonight."
- Sammy Chungs Tracksuit

"I for once have decided to take a pragmatic approach to this defeat to all the doom and gloom sayers and make one key observation. One of which no one would like but will undoubtfully agree with. This result, this battering, this humiliation has been coming ever since we came out of lockdown. For me the performance wasn't born out of anything other than arrogance. We looked over at West Ham who are struggling, players turning on owners, fans turning on everybody with no signings and figured if we just show up we will do the business. They had their manager off sick having had to play two games without him had a point to prove. We, for the first time under Nuno, played as if a win was a foregone conclusion and sadly there are players in that team who cannot have that mind set because frankly they aren't good enough."
- Bankswolf The Third

"Shocking, pathetic and disgusting. So many players just didnt show up today. Reminded me of how appalling Everton and West Ham have looked in recent times. I cannot help but think Nuno gambled he could get another season out of Moutinho. Could ultimately be his undoing. Hoping we dont get sucked into a relegation battle."
- BCWolf

"Yep, West Ham are very average but Antonio has been playing superbly since the first restart, spearheading a poor team to get good results. Before the first goal we were well in control but Antonio made our fragile mis-selected defence panic, then you can't play on the break if you're two down. We had enough warning in the first half against City with that defence, but they were very exposed to pace again so maybe Neves/Moutinho has to change in front of them, and we need players playing in their correct positions....Boly left, Coady middle, Saiss/Hoever right. A bad night all round really."
- BlahBlah

"I switched off after 65 minutes. Credit to the Hammers who from the first whistle worked as a team, showed more energy, conmmitment and won almost all of their 50/50 battles. Despondent. No. Worried. Well, mildly moist. It's neither surprising (nor predictable by the way) but reconfirm that this league, this year, will be open as...(apply your own simile)"

"This may make some laugh given we scored nil and created very, very little but for me, Nuno is trying to set us up more offensively. This is what many of us wanted. In the first half we started very high up the pitch. Traore and Neto in particular were too far up the pitch, too narrow. This left us massively overrun in midfield and down the flanks we got absolutely leathered. Vinagre in particular. We actually played some tidy stuff at times and it is good to see more bodies in the final third, but we had no spark and all the neat and tidy play wasnt in areas that was going to hurt West Ham - and the moment we lost the ball we looked suspect. We have been such a well oiled counter attacking side, I am not sure we are ready for this. That could have been seven or eight-nil. Genuinely. Nuno should have scrapped three upfront and gone three in midfield because we were overrun, overpacked and frankly bullied. What makes it worse is, this is against a very poor, very disillusioned club. We underestimated them massively. We were cocky in our approach."

"Undeniably the ref's bizarre handling of the free kick/ advantage sets the tone for that (great finish BTW). But make no mistake that was a very worrying performance. If there is one thing this Nuno team used to be sure of before it was our identity and tactics, I didn’t see any of that tonight, saw a load of individual performances with a sprinkling of terrible errors/ lapses of concentration. Too early to genuinely hit the panic button, but that was a bottom three performance and needs major attention.
- Alex Rae The Substitute

"West Ham did to us what we usually do to them. Played us on the counter and played to their strengths."
- ShrewsWolf1989

"That was a relegation level performance. We will be nowhere near the European places this season if we don’t get a couple of first team players in. We’ve signed a load of kids with about 10 first team performances between them. Semedo will improve. Adama Is totally infuriating. He is a luxury player that we cannot afford at the moment."
- Matt

"I have had a sleep and last night still looks as bad. We were that far off it that it raises a huge amount of concern. I don't see that we are playing a new system. It's more that Nuno has said he wants to adapt a new style of play and dominate the ball. What i saw last night was us being dominated, playing a system poorly, a lack of energy and a lack of organisation. I just dont understand how we put in such a poor showing. They need a rocket up their **** for Sunday and three points are a must. I can't believe that i'm now looking at the Fulham match with little confidence."
- MrwulfAndrew

"I thought we were pretty good tbf. They did have Drogba up top what do you expect, that was Drogba, right?"
- OoohRobbieRobbie

"West Ham were excellent with a standout performance by Antonio. Also Bowen. A diabolical Wolves performance. I can’t criticise the individuals excessively however I’ve never seen us so sloppy at the back. Traore well controlled by West Ham. Total rubbish. Did anyone do anything promising? We missed Podence and Jonny. Did we miss Jota and Doherty? Difficult to say. On a night like tonight Jota would probably have been totally anonymous like everyone else while Doherty would have handballed it for a penalty. The worst defending I’ve ever seen from Wolves."
- bennymacca

"We've become West Ham."
- WW1963

"With the exception of Neto, and the odd flourish from Adama through the middle it was just slow, cumbersome, one pace. Semedo has a lovely touch. He will be the least of our problems this season. Our midfield is a wet paper napkin without Dendoncker. Fabio Silva? He may turn out to be Cristiano incarnate, but if we've really just blown the best part of £40m on a player who is going to need a year to get to grips with the physicality of the league, that isn't clever business. Antonio and Bowen bullied us today like Wood and Barnes in that Burnley game last August. Where is our physical presence? A massive wake up call tonight. ****ing depressing, but we know how to evolve and we'll do it again."
- The Wolf In The North

"Tonight was a reality check. We've been hyped up by the media and by people on here saying how great we are. All this 'mind the gap' business and how the Albion are years behind us when in reality they are just two points behind us. Tonight's game was probably the worst performance under Nuno. All in all, crap all round tonight. Not panicking but I'm a realist - top six, don't think so. It be harder this season, Everton will challenge Arsenal plus the regulars. I will be happy with top half maybe an FA Cup run. We have probably overachieved the last couple of years and people need to realise we are nowhere near where we want to be yet. A few bad results and then we're not so far off our local rivals."
- Bilston paul

"And the ball was ****ing moving for their first goal. VAR is a waste of time."
- mikic

"I'm getting annoyed again by the BT lot refusing to say the first came from a free kick where the ball was still moving. **** performance and bull**** from Cole, Blondie and lanky after it. I honestly haven't been this angry after a defeat for a long time."
- Wall heath Wanderer

"I actually don't think West Ham played that well. Would be interested in seeing the xG. Antonio was the major difference. But our defence was shocking today. Vinagre and Saiss the worst but I don't think we played that badly overall. Then again, to concede four and create nothing is pretty bad!"
- Golden Wanderer

"Tonight has to be surely be, THE WORST performance from a Wolves side under Nuno. Completely manhandled, taken apart at the back and ALMOST NOTHING GOING FORWARD! Three defeats on the bounce was not in the script but all completely deserved on our performances and I thus hope, that a Warnock style rollicking or two, gets dished out after last week and tonight!"
- Kashmire Hawker

"4-0 against one of the worst teams in the league. **** right off."
- AmsterdamWolf

"Well, I've not been too well for a while so this game will have to be the last I watch for now. I was getting better until I foolishly watched this excuse of a Wolves performance. My anger was rising well before half time and I stupidly carried on watching. My blood pressure has skyrocketed, I cannot afford to put myself through this again. My wish is for Nuno to get all players together tomorrow, introduce them to each other, formulate a playing style that all of them understand and, more importantly, are able to execute. Until then I'm not willing to put myself through all the angst, anger and rising blood pressure all that results in, can't risk it."
