A victory for the fans - PPV to be scrapped

The controversial Pay Per View scheme for Premier League matches is to be scrapped following this weekend's round of fixtures.

Fans across the country were furious when the league announced plans to charge £14.95 for every game not already being carried by one of the approved broadcasters.

And the widespread backlash has forced the Premier League into a u-turn with the revelation that the scheme will end following this weekend's fixtures - which include West Ham's London derby with Fulham.

Although no formal vote was taken at today's meeting of league stakeholders, it is expected that an announcement will be made imminently confirming no further games will be made available via PPV for the rest of 2020.

However clubs could still continue with a fee-per-match system although at greatly reduced cost to supporters - although that is considered to be unlikely given the strength of feeling from football fans.

The news means that some matches could be made available on free-to-air channels as was the case during Project Restart, including the BBC.

The scheme - which was announced before the Government announced a nationwide lockdown for the rest of November - will not end immediately as some supporters have already paid for this weekend's broadcasts.
