One year on: Hammers United look back

It's a year to the day since supporters group Hammers United staged a major anti-board demonstration in the shadow of the Olympic Stadium.

And despite the team's improving fortunes on the pitch, Chairman Paul Colborne revealed that the organisation are continuing to call for the club's current owners and vice chair to step down from their positions.

"I'm overjoyed that West Ham are playing well and getting results," he told KUMBTV. "I know my Committee feel the same way and I'm sure our members feel the same way. At the end of the day we're West Ham supporters.

"But with regards to Hammers United's stance, nothing has changed at all. We're not happy with the way the football club is being run.

"Our stance only changes if our membership instructs us to. If we were to win the league and the Champions League perhaps our members would ask us to call off the protests, although I doubt it very much."

Later this week Hammers United expect to reveal the results of a survey in which thousands of fans recently participated, while a new independent supporters group - which is set to replace the much-derided Official Supporters Board - is also about to be launched.

All in all it's been an incredibly busy 12 months for the group's Committee, which has seen its membership grow from 8,000 to 17,000 West Ham United fans since that first very overt public display of discontent with the club's current owners.

Reflecting on that momentous day in January 2020, Colborne recalled: "There was a bit of a panic as we didn't think the authorities had given us a large enough area. But in the end it panned out alright, even though the sound system was rubbish and half the people there couldn't hear what was going on!

"There were a few teething problems, but by and large it went ok. There was no trouble and no arrests - and most importantly it led to much greater things not too long after that when about 8,500 supporters attended our first march."
