The opposition view: Brighton

Numerous references from Seagulls fans to "top six" and "Champions League-chasing" opposition. Yes, dear Hammers, they DO mean us! Something, at least, to take comfort from following a disappointing night down in East Sussex as West Ham fail to beat Brighton AGAIN, in the latest edition of the OV...

"Lots of things could have happened to stop that [Benrahma shot] going in. White originally bangs it against Bissouma. We give the winger a load of time. White rolls around on the floor instead of looking for the block. We give Benrama a load of time on the edge of the box. Sanchez is standing too far to the right. Not going to criticise the defence generally, (though we didn't do that well). It's the general pedestrian approach to attacking that cost us the chance of 3 points. In this league you have to expect to concede the odd decent strike. You need to get your own good goals."

"Pleased that we didn’t get less than it felt we deserved! It was very frustrating to yet again lose a lead so close to the end, but a point against a top six side is very acceptable, especially with the injuries."
- Eric Youngs Contact Lens

"We didnt win, but I still felt positive after the final whistle. We were solid defensively and completely matched a top six side fighting for a European place even though we were 'on the beach'."

"Poor game. Another draw. West Ham should have been out of sight at half time. Our defenders left so many of there players free outside box throughout the game. As soon as Alli went wide in second half he looked our most dangerous player. I don't know why he didnt start there. I know we had injuries but next season cannot have so many games with players out of position."
- amexer

"Fornals took out two of our players before they scored so there’s no way the goal should have stood, but the referee allowed it because the game meant something to them."
- El Turi

"As soon as we scored I text my mates and said 'too soon' - we need to score at 90 minutes plus to stand a chance of holding on to a lead."
- HantsSeagull

"At least Biss didn’t get a second yellow, so we can give him a decent send off on Tuesday."
- Quinney

"Ecstatic to fuming in the space of a couple of minutes. Excellent goal chalked off to calamitous defending. Fair result though, not the greatest game I've ever seen."
- Gabbafella

"Positives from tonight. A hugely depleted Albion held a full strength West Ham with everything to play for. A lovely finish from Welbeck. A good little cameo from Tau and an excellent ball for the goal. We still have an outside chance of matching or even beating last seasons points total. We didn’t deserve the win over the 90 minutes in my opinion, so a point is fair."
- Reddleman

"25 points dropped from a winning position. Worst record in the PL. Why can we defend well until we score, but after that everything is wrong? Weak mentality? Wrong tactical instructions? Why we can not LEARN at all? Obviously I know it's impossible to defend every time but if you add 25 points we would be 5th in the table right now..."
- Machi

"We are Brighton, moving in the right direction. We do not have a divine right to being in the Premier League, I have been watching them for over 55 years, what have we learnt in our second incarnation of the top league? When dont have the funding of the top ten, which is fine, we are in progress. But even if this is our points total this year, you have to be blind or a complete **** to not see improvement and exciting way we are progressing. When you truly love something, it hurts personally when someone knocks it. Always a Brighton supporter Win, Lose or Draw - no matter which league we play in."
- DavePage

"The more I reflect on the game the more positive I am. That game was huge for West Ham, given their situation it was one of their biggest games of the season and they were at full strength. We had nothing to play for and were missing five guaranteed starters, four of which play in our back five. And yet we held them really pretty comfortably and were certainly the better team in the second half. Once we get over the disappointment of the late equaliser I am sure that’s a huge confidence booster for the team to take into next season."
- Reddleman

"Microcosm of the season that - nothing spectacular, occasional moments of excitement followed ultimately by disappointment."
- BBassic

"We are competing in the best league in the world. We have one of the best defences in it. We have players who can keep possession and pass the ball around as if on elastic. We create endless chances and never get hammered (other than by some of our own fans). We are a wafer thin mint away from being top 10. We don’t have a big corporation backing us. We live within a budget. We have a superb academy and have developed facilities that most clubs would die for. We don’t want to lose it all as others looking for glory have done in the past. To be honest I can’t believe how far we have come. There were times last night I was mesmerised by how well we passed the ball around. I never ever thought I would see my team have players capable of that. Four years developing in the Premier League, with the last two with a young manager who looks like he is going places. I remain optimistic that results will start reflecting our play next season."

"Surely we have to progress. If we don't, something must change. Potter has us playing attractive football but I'm not convinced he can change our setup to react to the opposition, where is plan B? Too often we're out thought in second half."
- andys320

" I know some people don’t like to recognise 'luck' but football is chaos and more often than not this season the football gods have been against us. We make one mistake? Punished with a goal. They make a mistake? It ricochets in their favour. Ball bounced free to one of them outside the box? Unsaveable worldie incoming. Ball bounces to us outside the box? We’ll miss or hit the woodwork. We concede pens that when are reversed don’t go our way. Insane refereeing. I could go on. I know, luck. But I don’t recall a season like this before with so many things go against us. Can’t wait for this season to end and to reset and go again."
- vagabond

"Total bollocks. I’m sure the Potter **** brigade will be saying how amazing we are, but **** that! I want us to win these games when we take the lead! Especially in the last few minutes."
- Hamilton

"Our ability to stay switched on and concentrate for a full game is about on a par with my son's under 10s team. They conceded once when an RAF Chinook flew fairly low over the pitch and they all stopped to wave at it. (Just to be clear, that was my son's team and not the Albion)."
- Bry Nylon

"The equaliser tonight sums up the way it’s gone this season. Starts off with a bizarre mistake from one of our players (Bissouma blasting it into Lallana’s back). Bad luck as the ball lands perfectly for one of their players. Bad luck as one of their players accidentally flattens two of ours putting them out of the game for a few crucial seconds (White should’ve got up sooner, Dunk would’ve). Player for the opposition scores the best goal of his season."
- Jimmy Grimble

"Tonight we've held a team going for the Champions League places with five first team players out."
- Seasidesage

"Their squad was fully fit chasing the Champions League, we’re missing three of our starting back five. We handled them pretty comfortably I’d say. If it wasn’t for one of their players harpooning two of our defenders in the area we probably take all three points."
- DarrenFreemansPerm

"We’re the first team to have faced Declan Rice in the last six games. If he’d not been injured, West Ham probably would be in that top four position right now."
- nwgull

"I thought we did amazingly well against a bigger, London club with more money than sense / prepared to pay bigger wages / owners who couldn't give a toss / a fan base who rely on watching their home team through binoculars. Yep, I feel better now."
- AmexRuislip

"Before tonight Benrahma’s had a shoeing for months as a disastrous signing on their main forum. It was inevitable."
- Weststander

"Bissouma clearance is deflected and falls perfectly for the Hammers. Then after a moment or two, Fornals brilliantly floors both Webster and White just before the goal. The sort of clever stuff that has gone West Ham’s way all season and gone against us in almost every game."
- Hugo Rune

"We just competed with a weakened team against a CL-chasing team and should have won.We weren’t anywhere near our best but still did enough. They scored a worldie. That was some finish from Benrahma, oof. Sure we could have closed him down a bit but you don’t expect worldies like that. Well actually you do when watching us. On we go. One goal conceded in the last four home games, I believe."
- vagabond

"A good point, a great finish from Danny. West Ham must hate us, they never win."
