Bittersweet fortunes for Yarmo

Andriy Yarmolenko may have scored the goal of the tournament so far at the Euros - but was to end Ukraine's opening game of the tournament disappointed, having finished on the losing side.

With Ukraine two goals behind, the West Ham forward scored a worldie from the edge of the penalty area after cutting inside from the right and sending a dipping drive over the head of Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg to bring his side back into the match.

Five minutes later the East Europeans completed an unlikely comeback, levelling through Roman Yaremchuk - before losing in the closing minutes thanks to Denzel Dumfries' late winning goal for the Netherlands in the Amsterdam Arena, in front of a partisan crowd.

And a frustrated Yarmolenko, speaking after the game and having registered his 41st strike for his country - an effort not dissimilar to his winning goal against Chelsea at the end of the 2019/20 season, revealed that the Ukrainian camp was hugely disappointed.

"They are all upset with the result because we pulled it back from being two-nil down but lost," he said. "It's a pity that we conceded in the last few minutes.

"But we're not so worried as there are two more games [to play] - and if we play with similar dedication, I'm sure that we'll get the points we need [to progress to the next stage] without any problem.

"We need to understand who we played against and where - and with their best teams on the field. It was difficult for us as they had the advantage.

"It wasn't a one-sided game. It was 2-0, then 2-2 but we lost. We need to analyse it with our coaching staff, they will point out our mistakes and we'll move forward."
