West Ham United are set to land yet another promising youngster having agreed a deal with former Rangers goalkeeper Brian Kinnear.

The 20-year-old has been without a club since being released by the Glasgow club at the end of the 2020/21 season but has been spending time at West Ham on trial.

And despite interest from Championship side Birmingham City, who had similarly offered the player a contract, Kinnear is understood to have opted to join West Ham instead with a deal set to be announced imminently.

Kinnear left Rangers following a Covid scandal

Regarded as a good prospect while at Rangers, Kinnear hit the news last season as one of five players - along with Nathan Patterson, Bongani Zungu, Calvin Bassey and loanee Dapo Mebudewho - who broke the club's Covid lockdown rules and was subsequently suspended.

Speaking about the incident at the time, Rangers boss Stephen Gerrard said: "We’re obviously not too happy about it. We were frustrated and disappointed that all the players were going to receive a ban.

"But it is what it is. We accept it. We put a statement out that I back very much and we move forward.”

A Scottish youth international, Kinnear briefly spent time on loan with Annan Athletic in the Scottish League Two before teaming up with Birmingham earlier in the summer following his departure from Rangers.
