Newcastle will be a tough test for us

David Moyes is hoping West Ham United make a flying start to the 2021/22 Premier League campaign this weekend at Newcastle United.

However the boss is mindful of the fact that his side were beaten both home and away by the Magpies last season and, as such, has warned supporters to expect a difficult challenge.

"Newcastle's been a tough game for us," he told Talksport. "We didn't beat them last season and they were about the only club in the bottom half [of the table] to beat us twice. Still, we'll go there with confidence.

"We played well last year but we had a player sent off which changed the game a little bit. But overall we'll go there and try and get off to a good start."

Meanwhile the boss admits that not having his full squad together for more than a fortnight is not ideal preparation for the new campaign - but doesn't expect his side to suffer as a result as most team's have faced the same predicament, following this summer's Euros and Copa America competitions.

"It's been a quick turnaround for all the clubs," he commented. "It might take us all quite a while to get up and running - I don't know how it'll turn out.

"We've had a pretty normal pre-season, just without four or five players for most of it. Some clubs will be in a similar situation while some clubs will have had more away.

"We're just getting back to normality and the quick turnaround has mainly been for the players who featured in the Euros - but what can we do, everybody's been in the same situation.

"I hope it doesn't take its toll, I hope it doesn't force more injuries to these boys or make them not perform as well - and I hope they get up and running quickly."
