He has been painted as a 'West Ham legend' by the consortium wishing to take control of the club in recent days - yet Rio Ferdinand has revealed his true colours, which don't appear to be claret and blue.

Ahead of Manchester United's opening game of the 2021/22 season against Leeds, the Peckham-born former England international posted a video of his journey to Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United underneath a message which stated "UNITED UNITED UNITED - good to be back home".

And while it's not entirely implausible that Ferdinand, who boasts more than 11 million followers on social media platform twitter could've been referring to West Ham rather than Manchester, it's fair to say the smart money would be on the latter.

Ferdinand - along with his brother Anton who, unlike Rio, is considered to be a bona fide Hammer - were revealed to be backers of PAI Capital's bid to buy West Ham United from the club's current owners earlier this month.

However fans soon questioned the elder of the two's allegiances, given that Rio has frequently suggested West Ham midfielder Declan Rice should move to Manchester United and frequently expresses his support for the club in the media.

That was just one of a string of perceived PR own goals so far by PAI Capital in their bid to win the hearts and minds of West Ham supporters.

The group launched their campaign through former apprentice candidate Tom Skinner - who later revealed he knew the key players behind PAI as they were clients of his mattress company - before releasing a statement via a fan channel which operates behind a paywall.
