Manuel Lanzini is the toast of the East End tonight after his first half goal was enough to knock Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup in their own back yard.
The Argentinian scored the only goal of the game after just nine minutes to send the Hammers through to the next round of the competition - and a home tie with the Red Devils' neighbours Man City.Just three days after West Ham were beaten at home by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side the tables were turned and this time it was the hosts who ended the match frustrated as they managed just six attempts on target thanks to a fine defensive performance from West Ham's second string.
Debutants Alphonse Areola and Alex Kral were included in David Moyes' starting XI, which saw a recall for 33-year-old Mark Noble - who was perhaps the happiest man in Manchester at the final whistle following his penalty miss in the final seconds of Sunday's Premier League encounter.
Meanwhile regular first team faces such as Declan Rice, Michail Antonio and Tomas Soucek watched from the sidelines as their replacements shone despite facing a reasonably-strong Manchester United side.
The winning goal came after a good move on the right flank which saw Ryan Fredericks dribble to the byeline before pulling the ball back for Lanzini, who stroked the ball into the far corner of Henderson's goal.
And try as they might, Man Utd simply had no answer - despite registering 27 efforts at goal, the vast majority of which were speculative and off target as the Hammers kept it tight at the back.
Craig Dawson and Issa Diop in particular produced superb performances, ably aided by Vladimir Coufal (who replaced the injured Fredericks) and Ben Johnson - while the likes of Andriy Yarmolenko and Jarrod Bowen worked tirelessly to limit space for the Red Devils in their own half.
Although Man Utd will claim they should have been awarded a first half penalty for a shirt tug by Noble on Jesse Lingard, the hosts should really have been reduced to ten men after Nemanja Matic produced two fouls in the second half - a kick out at Coufal and a studs up, ankle high lunge at substitute Fornals - either of which could've been rewarded with a red card.
Although in the end few can argue that West Ham - who squandered late chances to make the final result even more emphatic - didn't deserve the win that sees them through to the next stage of the competition.
