The opposition view: Manchester United

Please accept our apologies for exposing you to the whining tantrums of the myopic Mancs for a second time inside four days. Though we suspect you might like this latest edition of the OV a little more, as Man U fans find reasons to blame match officials for their purported inadequacies and explain why being dumped out of the Carabao Cup is a "good thing" for a 'top four' team without a trophy of any sort since 2017...

"I get the need for some rotation in yesterday's game. What really frustrates me is making 11 changes and bringing in too many players who were rusty all in one go and leaving out too many scorers. We had three winnable home games in a row. We could've rotated the players amongst those games in a valid attempt to win all three. I know it's the fashionable thing to make huge amounts of changes in domestic cup games - even for mid-table clubs who have little reason for doing so - but we didn't have to make as many as we did for this game and reduce our chances of winning by as much as we did. It just feels a very avoidable, unnecessary and frustrating loss."
- Bertie Wooster

"That's five out of seven games where Ole has completely mismanaged his players to the point it has noticeably had an adverse effect on the performance. The same pattern as last season where it made most of our games extremely frustrating to watch. I have been behind him and defended him a lot but he does not know how to use his own players which is not acceptable when he's worked with them for years and bought half of them."
- noodlehair

"People who think we played well need to watch some other top teams play. That was shit. Greenwood is our best attacking player behind Ronaldo."
- IhabX7

"However this game is analysed, the end result is we lost. That's another attainable trophy gone. And for all that we pushed, West Ham had the better chances. Yes we were open while pushing, but they stayed alive and structured enough to produce those chances. Let's see how long we continue following this script of being 'actually good' but not 'quite good enough'. It will be such a painfully wasted season if we win nothing and then sack Ole. Cos it really would have been a call we could have made so much earlier."
- Okey

"If we’re relying on refs to win games that’s a bigger problem than the quality of the officiating. And yes, I believe we had a clear pen tonight but we should be scoring from open play. The reality is we learned nothing from the weekend game, Moyes came out with exactly the same tactics but this time we couldn’t score. Accept it, move on."
- U.N.C.L.E

"We rotated and gave the squad players a chance, they failed. You should be able to beat a back-up West Ham squad at home."
- joedirt87

"Matic's knee to the bollocks was easily the highlight. I can't say I'm that bothered to be out of this competition despite the fact we need to win trophies, as it's become a waste of time and I'm happy to get early-season minutes into a few legs. Hopefully missing the rest of the rounds of this will suit us later on."
- 12OunceEpilogue

"We dominated West Ham's second XI because they invited us to. Once they scored they just parked in their penalty area. In terms of which team had the better chances to score, I think West Ham had three, whereas we had one. Lots of shots but nearly all from distance. Poor performance. Not a big deal being out of the Cup, but I do think it will increase the pressure on Ole. Hoping for improvement."
- Dazzmondo

"West Ham draw [Man] City in the next round. Did we dodge a bullet there?"
- Banana Republic

"Started poorly and deservedly went behind. Then we absolutely hammered them and should’ve won comfortably. Sancho and VDB looked good. Martial was dreadful. Bruno tried too hard when he came on. Ah well, if we had to pick a tournament to go out of early, we’d have all picked this. City win it anyway."
- sewey89

"Given the choice I'd have taken the three points ahead of progressing in this competition on the grounds that we were unlikely to get past the semi-final stage given we don't play our full-strength side (and look who West Ham have drawn in round 4). It's a fairly meaningless competition unless you actually win it (the level of excitement at going through doesn't sit on the same level as FA Cup or Europa, for instance). That said there were some worrying things: it shows our squad still isn't really deep enough - this wan't West Ham's first team either. Of course, the whole thing might have been different had Jon Moss actually known the rules - trying to remove an opponent's shorts in the penalty is not usually allowed!"
- mitchmouse

"I think my heat map tonight would cover more ground than Martial's, and I just went to the fridge a couple of times. We had a shedload of chances but just took none of them. Noble could have been off by half time, and we definitely should have had a penalty for that shirt pull, which Moss was staring right at."
- OnlyTwoDaSilvas

"We should have had two penalties last night. The Noble pulling down Lingard incident. And then Areola totally missed his punch on a corner, and wiped out Bailly. Nothing given. Couldn't believe it."
- The Corinthian

"Not clinical enough from us. Big day out for them. Never seen a team run themselves into the ground as much as West Ham do against us. It’s massive for them. Jon Moss got his fat body in the way of the ball and a further minute later we carried on. He then blows up immediately. Ridiculous."
- Solius

"I thought before the game that Moss plus no VAR was a disater waiting to happen. He's not fit enough to keep up with the play. I'm sure I pointed it out last year but he referees the whole game from the middle third of the pitch to save him the running. Having said all that he had a great view of the penalty but chose to ignore it. You can't help but feel that the red shirt Jesse was wearing affected his judgement."
- Red_Aaron

"Playing against 12 men was always going to be difficult. Atkinson/Moss are one of the best players of West Ham."
- RedDevil@84

"How that ref did not give us a penalty for Noble dragging down Lingard should be investigated. He's either blind as a bat or he's been bought. Either way he should not be reffing at this level. Ridiculous. I really liked Matic kneeing that fecker in the groin. Then he raked someone else's shins with his studs. I like that Ole is a nice guy but I want our players to be bastards on the pitch. Also, feck Noble."
- Wing Attack Plan R

"Are we now banned from being awarded a penalty this season? Was not Lingard's shirt being pulled to prevent him from shooting? Is that not a penalty? I could swear if I was so inclined!"
- Farfetched

"Absolutely no excuse for that fat bastard's non-call on the Noble foul. Holy cow how did he not give that."
- Harry190

"Not a single penalty yet this season. We've been denied at least 4-5 stonewallers by these bent refs."
- Samid

"Genuinely unarsed. We were easily the better team and most of our flaws on the night we already knew about. I’d rather win it, but if we have to go out, best to do it straight away. I'd say it increases our chances of winning the league by a percent or two."
- largelyworried

"Quietly glad we're out, truth be told. It's a nothing cup and if not being in it gives us an extra couple of days off here and there, then I'm more than happy to be shot of it."
- goptun

"Well, the possibility to give minutes [to reserve players] is now over. Still, who gives a feck about the Carabao Cup. No-one."
- Hansi Fick

"The better team lost. We didn’t help ourselves though. Don’t mind being out of the League Cup, it’s not important. The only thing I enjoyed about the game, other than Lindelof’s MOTM performance, was Matic’s thuggery in the 2nd half."
- Bastian

"Honestly don't care about this cup. But jeez we were shit."
- AaronRedDevil

"The League Cup is the worst of the cups to win granted but we've won feck all for years now. It would be nice to get something."
- SuperiorXI

"Looking at the teams on the pitch we should be walking that game. We looked quicker and we kept creating half chances against the WH block, which is good. I'm not too bothered by the loss, though, overall, as long as it allows us to concentrate on the bigger trophies."
- Flying_Heckfish

"Thought we were the better side apart from the first ten minutes, we should have had a penalty and probably would have won the game had it been given. It’s probably better we have this competition off our schedule in the long run."
- El Zoido

"Meh, glad we're out of a cup that doesn't mean anything to us anyway. Hopefully we can focus elsewhere now."
- crossy1686

"I'm seriously pissed off with fans' attitude that no cups matter except the CL. Maybe when you're winning trophies all the time you can get arrogant and complacent about some and prioritise others. When you're not winning any trophies then you should be damn well trying to win one. Whichever it is. That should be the priority. Win a trophy. This was probably our most realistic chance, along with the FA Cup. Unless we drop into the Europa League again. I'd be delighted with any of those at this stage."
- Bertie Wooster

"West Ham hardly had a kick until the final 10 minutes when we just threw the kitchen sink at them. Martial let me down, Sancho was promising again and Mata and Telles are pretty pointless. VdB has a good footballing brain but he's pretty terrible defensively. Bruno was fecking horrific coming on trying to be the hero, and Lingard showed why he's not quite first XI material because he doesn't quite have the ability on the ball or creativity to thrive in full matches against teams that play deep."
- Valencia Shin Crosses

"Shocked how many are not bothered at all by us again losing to an inferior side. All good I guess, off to the next one so we can write 'hope we learn from this'. Can’t blame the team too much for this, we looked toothless even if dominating, but these guys don’t get to play together too much and you could tell the chemistry / well drilled training movements were just not there. Some bad subs and personal decisions by Ole and there we go, we’re out to poor West Ham that wins at OT first time in 15 years. Awful result."
- Red Star One

"Pathetic. I know its a second team but we had enough quality on the pitch to win the game. Dreadful."
- tentan

"We have an unnecessarily big squad of players. I would accept a loss to West Ham had more youngsters played. When a second string United side can’t beat a second string West Ham side it does make you wonder why do we still have these players?"
- Josep Dowling

"I'd be interested to hear how long can Manchester fecking United go on being trophy-less before we should start worrying? Is it five years? Is it 10? We're not talking about a league here, mind, just a trophy."
- Rightnr

"OGS has no interest in cups and it shows in how the team plays. Honestly believe we will win nothing under OGS and the current coaching staff, could have lost by three at home."
- wolffy

"Thought we played some decent stuff but had the penetration of an ice cream dildo. This team needs any trophy and the competition was a good chance for competitive matches for our squad players, I mean that was a first XI team for a bulk of PL sides we had out there tonight. The more games the better with our [squad] depth."
- Devil may care

"Very disappointing result. this competition is a chance for silverware. With an extremely competitive league and Champions League i dont think its to be sniffed at like the old days. I think West Ham are better positioned to make 10 changes as they play one simple way and every player in the squad will be trained to slot into a certain position in the system. The early goal helped them in that aspect."
- Jezpeza

"Oh well, if we had to win and lose one each of the West Ham games, this is the one you throw away, I guess. Martial clearly isn't fecked with football any more. If he was a horse he'd be turned into glue by now, which might actually improve his work rate."
- Red Stone

"That was embarrassing. I cannot understand how people are happy with displays like this. We were playing at home against a mediocre team and we never looked like scoring."
- frostbite

"Frustrating loss against a West Ham side that had one shot on target until the 87th minute. 27 Man United shots showed the amount of huffing and puffing they did but was unable to blow Moyes' defensive tactics down. Tonight highlighted once again if it was needed that this [Man] United squad is still full of dead wood."
- always_hoping

"We just lost to a West Ham B team managed by Moyes after looking pretty average in every game this season. Hardly surprising. Don't think anyone cared about the League Cup but our performances are worrying."
- Godfather

"Moyes is Moyes. I hate Noble."
- RedTiger

"Did anyone notice that Moyes was constantly on the touchline, issuing orders to his players, encouraging and coaching them throughout most of the game. Contrast that with the screen shots of Ole just looking on, maybe a bit bewildered, or of him conferring with Mike Phelan, as if they couldn’t figure out what to do next."
- Banana Republic

"What's more concerning is just how better coached West Ham seem to be. Moyes has definitely improved their football and team far better than Ole has at [Man] Utd. You can actual see patterns of play and a style to West Ham's team. [Man] Utd are one of the worst top sides in terms of coaching in Europe."
- maximus419

"Disappointing. It was a cup competition. It was Moyes. It was that horrible mob."
- The Brown Bull

"No real surprises, we always struggle with major team changes. Poor defending for the WHU goal other than that we controlled most of the game. Shame we are out as this comp as it gives the fringe players a few games. WH very organised, two banks of four when we were in possession. Very reminiscent of Moyes' old Everton teams. other than that they were bang average."
- RedIan

"Surely Moyes has learned a lot since his [Man] United days. He came completely unprepared for that job and the magnitude of a challenge was just way too much for him. West Ham is a much different structure, he surely has more respect and say than in his [Man] United days and he had a decade to study."
- Red Star One

"Why didn't we see any of that with Moyes at United? He looked utterly out of depth and the football was horrible."
- Barnslig

"I fecking hate Moyes."
- JPB

"It was a very underwhelming performance no doubt and they were lucky that West Ham didnt add two or three more goals at the end. The only highlight for me was the the utterly bizarre Matic knee to the balls of the West Ham player long after the ball had rolled into touch in the second half. What exactly would have possessed him to do that? it really should have been a straight red. Totally unnecessary stupidity."
- Red1968

"If you can't beat a second string West Ham team fielding players in their mid 30s, then you pretty obviously don't deserve to progress and you lose the opportunity to play more games. The team we fielded today should've been more than good enough to progress past this West Ham side."
- Barnslig

"We may have had 27 shots but the game's best three chances were for West Ham."
- paulscholes18

"Speaking post-match, Noble told Sky Sports: 'That’s football, he dived and I told him off for screaming, funnily enough he didn’t really do it at our place but he does it here!' What a knob. Just adding to an agenda that United players dive."
- BeforeKeanetherewasRobson

"Glad Noble missed at the end. The only positive really."
- Stookie

"Jeez - you would think our VERY expensive second string could beat a defence marshalled by Craig Dawson. Ole shown up again."
- LawmanMan

"Lacking a little in the final third was the issue. Didn't play too bad, there were some decent performances, but didn't get the bounce of the ball at times. Losing at home against West Ham isn't great though, regardless of what cup it is."
- BusbyMalone

"We did ok, but you just knew West Ham were gonna come like this was a cup final to them after the weekend, so not surprised we lost to be honest. Too slow and ponderous on the ball."
- eire-red

"Moments in football can win games, it's not always the story of the full 90 minutes. In any case we were never a real threat to West Ham, at home. They were more comfortable in possession."
- United in sin

"God I hate West Ham. Bubble shagging shit c*nts."
- CallyRed
