Rice withdraws from international duty

Declan Rice has withdrawn from the England squad to Albania and San Marino next week with an undisclosed illness.

The 22-year-old midfielder will now recover before preparing for West Ham's next Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers eight days from now, according to the club.

"West Ham United can confirm that Declan Rice has returned to thecClub from international duty with England due to illness," read a brief statement posted on West Ham's website.

"The Hammers midfielder will miss the Three Lions' FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino over the next week. The club can confirm that Declan’s illness is not COVID related.

"He will now recover before returning to training at Rush Green."

Rice is understood to have contracted a heavy cold in the past few days, leading to his decision to withdraw from Gareth Southgate's 25-man squad. He is not expected to be replaced by England for the two forthcoming fixtures.
