Goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Fernandinho condemned West Ham to a narrow defeat at a snow-covered Etihad Stadium.

However there was at least some cheer for the travelling Hammers fans thanks to Manuel Lanzini's injury-time belter that ensured West Ham are still to be beaten by more than a single goal this season.

After a fairly even opening in which the Hammers caused City plenty of problems without managing to capitalise on any of their positive build-up play, the hosts took the lead just after the half-hour mark when a Mahrez cross was turned in at the far post by City skipper Ilkay Gundogan.

And that's how it stayed until the half time interval even though City had also seen a Mahrez effort disallowed for offside (17 minutes), Ben Johnson clear another effort off the line (37 minutes) and Jesus hit the woodwork from an acute angle after Lukasz Fabianski had spilled a shot moments earlier (43 minutes).

The second half - which was only able to proceed following a concerted effort by City groundstaff to clear the pitch of a freshly fallen shroud of snow during an extended half time interval - was a far less notable affair, with the only real incident of note being a painful injury sustained by Aaron Cresswell after he crashed into the post following another last-ditch clearance.

The game only sparked into life with the clock ticking down - firstly when substitute Fernandinho, only on the pitch for two minutes sidefooted City into an unassailable 2-0 advantage in the final minute of regulation time.

Yet there was still time for West Ham to reply as sub Manuel Lanzini staked his claim for a starting berth against Brighton in midweek when firing home a powerful strike from the edge of the box, with a goal not entirely dissimilar to his effort at White Hart Lane in the 3-3 draw against Tottenham last season.

The Argentine's strike also ensured that the Hammers have still not been beaten by more than a single goal in any of their four Premier League defeats this season.
