Said Benrahma's African Cup of Nations came to an inglorious and abrupt end in Cameroon this afternoon after defending champions Algeria were beaten 3-1 by Ivory Coast.

Following their opening day draw with Sierra Leone and 1-0 defeat against Equatorial Guinea, the Algerians needed to win in order to stand any chance of qualifying for the next phase of the competition.

However goals from Franck Kessie (22 minutes), Ibrahim Sangare (39) and Nicolas Pepe (54) sent the North Africans tumbling out of the competition at the first hurdle.

And they were denied further humiliation when former West Ham striker Sebastian Haller's injury-time effort was ruled out for offside - but not until after the final whistle had blown.

Sofiane Bendedka's 73rd minute effort gave Algeria some hope of securing a result but it was a case of too little, too late for his side - who has already wasted a great chance to score earlier in the half when Man City's Riyad Mahrez hit the post from the penalty spot.

As for Berahma, who will now make his way back to England, he featured for just 45 minutes before being replaced at the half time interval by 33-year-old Islam Slimani.
