Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has become the latest high-profile commentator to have his say on the Kurt Zouma situation.

Starmer, who is more usually known for going toe-to-toe with Prime Minster Boris Johnson in the House of Commons than sharing his views on football has joined a long line of celebrities and high-profile individuals to express their concern over the Kurt Zouma 'cat' video.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Sounds, Starmer joined the pile-on by slamming West Ham United for allowing Zouma to play against Watford on Tuesday evening.

"I don't know what they were thinking in playing him the other night," he opined. "That was just a mistake.

"It's such a bizarre thing to be so cruel like that. It's very, very odd, but I think the club needs to do the right thing, which is to drop him.

"West Ham had a choice. They shouldn't have played him. I think a lot of their own fans think that they shouldn't have played him, and they've made a mistake in my view."

Meanwhile Zouma's brother Yoan has been suspended by Dagenham & Redbridge pending an investigation by the RSPCA, who have seized both of the West Ham defender's pet cats.

Having witnessed the fallout and public reaction to the story, the Essex club confirmed the player would not be representing them until the investigation is complete.

“Yoan was this week contacted by the RSPCA to assist in their investigation and is fully cooperating with them," read a club statement.

"The club has therefore decided that until the RSPCA has completed its investigations, Yoan will not play for Dagenham & Redbridge in any competitive match.

"Any further action deemed necessary to be taken will be made at the conclusion of the RSPCA investigation.”
