David Moyes was critical of his team's attacking prowess as they slumped to a disappointing FA Cup exit against Southampton.

The Hammers were beaten 3-1 at St Mary's despite the manager insisting they had plenty of chances to kill off the game long before Armando Broja struck the decisive third goal deep into added-on time.

"It was disappointing," said Moyes, speaking after the game. "I thought we had opportunities long before they scored the goal to be in front, but we lacked quality in the final third. We are lacking in quality in the final third of the field.

"I thought our build up play and our play in the main was okay. We had chances to be in front and then went behind to a worldy of a goal. I did not see that coming and it put us on the back foot a little bit."

Meanwhile Moyes felt his team had only themselves to blame for conceding a second goal which arrived a matter of minutes after Michail Antonio's effort had got the Hammers back on level terms.

However he was unable to comment on either of the VAR incidents - the first involving Diallo's elbow on Tomas Soucek and the second which led to a penalty for the hosts.

"At one each it looked like there was only going to be one team winning it," he insisted. "But we made a terrible mistake defensively which gave them a chance to get back in front.

"I have not seen either of them [VAR decisions] back. My first thought was I did not think it was a penalty and I have not seen anyone say anything different at the moment. My first feeling was that it was not, but until I look at it again I cannot tell you what I really think.

"They tell me it [Soucek's injury ] is a nasty wound and he has had some stitches, but I've not had a chance to speak to the medical team yet."

Yet the boss was pleased to see Antonio back on the scoresheet - even if there were few other positives to take from the match.

"We are pleased for him, that he got a goal, but we have other players who need to find some quality and start to make the right decision in the final third, completing passes and making the right choices in the final third," complained Moyes.

"I don't know how many times we made the wrong choice in and around the box, but it cost us tonight.

"We will keep doing what we are doing and do the best we can. We build up well and got good opportunities but our finishing and final pass was poor, so poor tonight."

However there was some good news with regards to Aaron Cresswell. who missed the game through an unknown injury - as did club captain Mark Noble.

"They both have injuries and it was a blow to miss them tonight," he confirmed. "But he [Cresswell] will be in contention [for Liverpool this weekend]."
