UEFA have fined West Ham United's Europa League semi final opponents Eintracht Frankfurt following a pitch invasion by home supporters at the end of the second led.
Home fans stormed on to the pitch at the WaldStadion, encouraged by club employees and stewards following the final whistle of the second leg which was won 1-0 by the Bundesliga side. And as a result, the governing body have slapped Frankfurt with an €80,000 fine and ordered them to play a fixture behind closed doors - although those conditions are suspended for two years and will only be enforced should similar incidents occur during that period.
"The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body made their decision based on the incidents that occurred during the UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg against West Ham United in Frankfurt on 5 May 2022," read a statement published by Frankfurt.
"The newly crowned Europa League-winners have been ordered to play a home match in a European club competition behind closed doors, although the punishment has been suspended for a period of two years. The body also handed out a fine of 80,000 euros.
"The punishment mainly related to the “pitch invasion” by Frankfurt supporters, who in the euphoria of reaching the final entered the field in large numbers at the final whistle, as well as the repeated setting off of pyrotechnics and throwing of objects."
West Ham fans in the away end watched bemused as thousands of German supporters rushed onto the pitch at the final whistle - only to flee when charged by Police minutes later.
