No prestige friendly at the London Stadium this summer

West Ham United's traditional curtain raiser at the London Olympic Stadium will not be taking place this summer, KUMB can reveal.

Since 2015 West Ham have completed their pre-season campaign with a Betway Cup clash, named after United's primary sponsor, against a major foreign club (bar 2020 when Bournemouth provided the opposition). On four occasions in the last six seasons, including the last three years, the fixture has taken place at the LOS.

West Ham beat Atalanta 2-0 last summer - but there'll be no pre-season home game in Stratford this year

Recent opponents in Stratford have included Serie A's Atalanta and La Liga's Athletic Bilbao, while Bundesliga outfit FSV Mainz beat West Ham at the Silver City Arena in July 2018.

Yet this year the club have postponed the annual event due to the unprecedented number of home matches already planned for the opening month of the 2022/23 season - and will instead be playing their final fixture of pre-season away from home.

The new Premier League campaign begins with a prestige fixture against reigning champions Manchester City at the LOS on 7 August before Brighton & Hove Albion (20 August) and Tottenham Hotspur (30 August) follow.

In addition to the three league fixtures there will also be a home match on either 18 or 25 August, as the Hammers face as-yet-unnamed opposition in their Conference League play-off tie.

And as a result of the heavy schedule, the decision has been taken to postpone this year's event in Stratford and end pre-season instead with an away fixture abroad - details of which are set to be announced by the club on Wednesday morning.
