West Ham United Midfielder Dagny Brynjarsdottir played the full ninety minutes of Iceland’s opening Group D game against Belgium on Sunday.

Belgium 1 – 1 Iceland

After a slow start to the game, both sides were spurred on by an incredible atmosphere, despite the match being played at Manchester City’s training complex (with a capacity of just 4,000) and grew into the action.

But it was to be a frustrating day for The Valkyries, who took the lead in the 50th minute through Berglind Thorvaldsdottir, only to find themselves pegged back seventeen minutes later, when Justine Vanhaevermaet slotted home a penalty to level the tie.

Goals from Katoto, Cascarino and a hat-trick for Grace Geyoro proved more than sufficient to dispatch the Italians, who managed a consolation strike of their own through Piemonte in the 76th minute. Three goal hero Geyoro was replaced in the 67th minute by ex-Hammer Kenza Dali.

France now face Belgium in the 8pm kick off on Thursday.

England remain firm favourites for the competition after demolishing Norway 8-0 on Monday evening. Meanwhile Northern Ireland were eliminated form the tournament, after losing their second game, conceding two goals to Austria.

England and Northern Ireland now meet in the final Group A game.
