David Moyes will refuse the temptation to throw Gianluca Scamacca in at the deep end when West Ham host Manchester City in Stratford this weekend.

However he believes the Hammers have landed themselves a gem of a player who could proive to be a huge success at West Ham given time.

The 23-year-old arrived at the club last month in a £35million switch from Sassuolo but is unlikey to feature in West Ham's season-opener due to his lack of match fitness, with Moyes declaring him "a little bit behind the other players at the moment".

Yet the boss has no doubt that Scamacca, who the club has watched for more than a year before making their move is a hugely talented individual with the capacity to be hugely successful in the Prmeier League.

"If you look around world football, there isn’t a giant bundle of forwards out there waiting to say ‘come on then,’ I’ll take one of these," he said, speaking ahead of this weekend's opening round of league fixtures.

"There are some clubs that have already got some which are not within reach. There are a couple like [Erling] Haaland and [Darwin] Nunez, but there wasn't a huge amount.

"Gianluca was someone we have been watching for a long time," confirmed the boss. "I see his link up play and his build up play is very impressive.

"I see him as a young centre forward, as 23 is young for someone to come into the Premier League. I’m looking to give him time [to acclimatise]; I hear other managers say you have to give these young players time as well.

"There are lots of things I like about him already. He’s given the team a lift and he will bring us a different dimension to say Michail Antonio, or maybe the two of them together at different times may give us an option as well.

"We are not going to push him too hard too quickly as we want to bring him on, get him right and bring him in when we feel he is ready to show his qualities."
