David Moyes has revealed that Angelo Ogbonna is unlikely to make his first team comeback until the beginning of September.

The Hammers face seven fixtures in August, the opening month of the 2002/23 season. However they are going to have to do without the veteran centre half, who is still recovering from the cruciate injury that ruled him out of most of last season.

"He's playing this afternoon for the Under 21s," said Moyes when asked to give an update on the Italian defender's progress.

"He's played his first 90 minutes last week. He's doing really well but he's not ready yet to be considered for the first team. He's coming along nicely and maybe in three or four weeks he'll be much closer to that."

With new signing Nayef Aguerd also absent through injury, that leaves Moyes with just Craig Dawson, Kurt Zouma and Issa Diop to choose from as established central defenders.

Yet Diop is also a doubt given that he has only just returned from a short break in France, meaning the Hammers are down to the proverbial 'bare bones' at the heart of the defence before a ball has even been kicked this season.

* Ogbonna played a full 90 minutes for the Under 21s in this afternoon's Premier League 2 clash with Fulham, which the Hammers lost 3-1.
