West Ham United's Under 21s enjoyed a thoroughly encouraging 3-2 win against Chelsea at Kingsmeadow on Friday afternoon.

Goals from George Earthy and the in-form Divin Mubama, whose brace against the Blues puts him in contention for a first team squad place for this Monday's trip to Derby County saw off the challenge of the hosts who went into the game top of the Premier League 2 table.

And manager Mark Robson was naturally delighted with his team's performance, which was only their fourth League win of the season and one which lifted them above both Tottenham and Wolves at the foot of the table.

"We have just hung on in the end, and defended for our lives," Robson told the club's website. "You've got to find a way to win sometimes and we did that, really scrapped at the end.

"Hegyi was brilliant in goal. At the back all the boys were good - Kaelan Casey was outstanding. Levi Laing too and [new signing] Luizão as well.

"We really believed in the group that we have got," he continued. "We believe in the way we play, trying to play through the thirds. We've been working really hard around our press.

"We've scored a couple of goals in the last two games from winning the ball back really well. We’re delighted with the victory and want to continue that now."

And there was special praise for young striker Mubama, who has already enjoyed a taste of first team football in the Conference League and Premier League this season.

"His second goal was just Premier League standard," beamed Robson. "It was such a good goal and such a great finish. He's ruthless and he’s on a roll for us at the moment, so long may that continue."

Meanwhile Freddie Potts revealed that morale in the camp is high once again following West Ham's unexpected victory.

"Everyone was buzzing," he said. "It’s so good to be in there with a winning feeling. Everyone’s in the dressing room shouting and screaming because the music went straight on!

"To win like we did, it’s unbelievable. As a team we dug in really well, defended well and took our chances. We have been playing well, but the results have not shown that until now."
