David Moyes has given an update on the situation regarding Jesse Lingard, who has been training with West Ham's first team squad since July.

The former Manchester United and England midfielder is currently out of contract having been released by previous club Nottingham Forest at the end of last season.

Although West Ham were widely tipped to sign the 29-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window deadline, no finalised contract has yet been offered by the club while Lingard continues to train at Rush Green.

And even though the Hammers have one space available in their 25-man Premier League squad, which can be utlised by a free transfer at any time, Moyes is clearly in no mood to rush any decision on the player.

"I think Jesse's starting to get himself back," said Moyes, when asked to clarify the club's position on Longard during his pre-match press conference on Friday lunchtime. "He's had the best part of a month of pre-season working and being involved in a lot of football, so he's doing well.

"We've got no real update to give you on what was said before. We're happy to try and get Jesse in the right condition."

Lingard spent half-a-season on loan at West Ham during the 2020/21 campaign, but snubbed a return to east London last season in favour of a move to Forest, who are considerably closer to his family home.
