A season best performance

Alphonse Areola's effort against Everton this afternoon has been rated as the best goalkeeping performance of the season.

The French international enjoyed a superb game and more than played his part in West Ham's 3-1 win - a victory that lifts the Irons to within two points of sixth spot in the Premier League.

Areola ensured the Hammers went into the half time interval on level terms thanks to a fantastic penalty save from Beto - to which he added a series of top-class stops to keep West Ham in the game.

And for his efforts, statistics site whoscored.com have awarded the 31-year-old stopper a match reating of 9.74 - their highest mark for any goalkeeper this season.

Interestingly the top three goalkeeping scores this season have all been achieved aginst The Toffees. Prior to this afternoon's match, Wolves' Portuguese international Jose Sa held the record with a score of 9.42.

And that narrowly beat Bernd Leno's rating of 9.11, achieved when Fulham drew 0-0 with Everton back in January.

Areola, who began the season as joint number one with veteran 'keeper Lukasz Fabianski has enjoyed an excellent season so far, achieving scored on 8+ of six seperate occasions thus far this season.

In addition to today's game, he received scores of 8.07 against Chelsea (h) and Manchester City (a), 8.20 in the goalless draw against Brighton on 2 January and 8.31 for the 3-1 win at Brighton back in August and the 2-0 win at Arsenal on 28 December.
