On controversial decisions, it is often claimed "these things tend to even themselves out over the course of a season".

And if that bears any resemblance to the truth, West Ham United are set to enjoy a bumper end to the current campaign.

Once again a Premier League match swung on the vagaries of VAR at a point when West Ham were coasting at 3-1, thanks to goals from Michail Antonio, Mo Kudus and Jarrod Bowen.

Egged on by the VAR team, which ordered referee Rob Jones to review a 77th-minute incident he had already decided warranted no further action, the hosts were awarded a penalty when serial diver Anthony Gordon planted his foot in front of substitute Kalvin Phillips' as the latter took aim to clear a loose ball in United's 18-yard box.

Despite making no contact with the ball, therefore effective fouling Phillips whose aim was obstructed, the three amigos agreed that a penalty should instead be awarded to Newcastle - a bizarre decision that ultimately affected the outcome of the match.

Spurred on by the resulting spot kick conversion, and given fresh hope having reduced the deficit to just one goal when all seemed lost, Newcastle pushed on and a double from late sub Harvey Barnes - a key target of David Moyes last summer - ensured the home side took all three points.

Robbed? It would've been less obvious had masks and swag bags been involved. We'll have a full match report for you soon...
