West Ham United's Jarrod Bowen has described his first appearance in a major international tournament as "special".

The forward was delighted to learn he was part of Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad a fortnight ago - and even more pleased to be called upon by the Three Lions boss to replace Arsenal's tiring Bukayo Saka in the latter stages of last night's 1-0 win against Serbia.

Within moments of his introduction Bowen provided a pinpoint cross for Bayern Munich's striker Harry Kane. Sadly, the striker was unable to convert with his header, which forced a tremendous save from Serbian stopper Predrag Rajkovic - thus denying the Hammer an assist.

Still, Bowen was delighted to play a role in England getting off to a perfect, winning start.

"Getting selected for the squad was one thing, and then I told myself that I wanted to set foot on the pitch," he told West Ham's website. "I’ve managed to do that, and on an occasion where we were defending a lead.

"To be part of that, in such significant circumstances was really special for me personally - but getting the result was also really important for the team.

"It was the first group game, which is always huge, and we’ve got the three points that we can take into Thursday now. Hopefully we can get another positive result in that game."

England's remaining group matches are against Denmark this Thursday, 20 June (5pm kick off) and next Tuesday (25 June) against Slovenia, who held the Danes to a 1-1 draw in their opening group fixture.

West Ham's three remaining representatives at this summer's tournament - French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola plus Czech Republic duo Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal - are due to play today and tomorrow.

While Areola's France face Austria later today, the Czech Republic have to wait until tomorrow (Tuesday) foe their first outing - against a highly-rated Portugal.
