Edson Alvarez is expected to miss the rest of Copa America as a result of the injury he received during Mexico's weekend win over Jamaica.

The Hammers midfielder was helped off the field after sustaining the freak injury early on Sunday's tie, which the North Americans won by a single second half goal against Michail Antonio's Jamaica.

And it has been confirmed Alvarez has sustained a serious hamstring tear, which could to keep him sidelined for the remainder of pre-season - and possibly the beginning of the new Premier League campaign, which kicks off in mid-August.

Speaking about the incident after the game, Mexico boss Jaime Lozano admitted the loss of West Ham's number 19 was a huge blow.

"We’re going to wait a couple of days to do some testing on him and to know well what he’s got going on,” he said.

"He’s extremely important. He’s a leader, he understands the game well. He’s important on the pitch and in the locker room as well. You listen to him talk, he has a way with words and when he speaks you listen.

"This was a tough blow for all of us."

Mexico's next outing comes against Venezuela in Inglewood, California on Wednesday, while Antonio's Jamaica face Ecuador in Las Vegas.
