Flynn Downes is closing in on a permanent switch to Southampton after he was granted permission by West Ham to undergo a medical.
The central midfielder spent last season on loan at St Mary's where he excelled, helping propel the Saints back into the top flight at the first attempt. And the former Swansea man is close to completing a return to the south coast, after West Ham accepted an offer worth in the region of £18million from Southampton following weeks of discussions between the two clubs.
Speaking about Downes during a fans Q&A last weekend, Saints boss Russell Martin suggested that it was only a matter of time before a deal was concluded.
"It will take time, we just have to be patient," he said. "I wanted him here last week, four weeks ago even.
"When someone is owned by another club and they are a good player, they are always going to try and keep them. I hope, that at some point, we will show enough love and give West Ham enough money."
Downes, who has been in Austria for pre-season training with the rest of Julen Lopetegui's first team squad is now set to return to England earlier than anticipated in order to undergo the medical.
At this stage, there is no confirmation that right back Kyle Walker-Peters is set to complete a move from Southampton to West Ham as part of the arrangement.
