Steidten on the move as defender bid accepted

West Ham are hoping to gazump Italian giants Juventus by signing Jean-Clair Todibo from Ligue 1 club Nice.

The French international has been courted by both clubs in recent weeks although neither West Ham nor the Serie A side had reached agreement with the player - who, while widely rumoured to have expressed a preference for joining Juve has neither confirmed or denied this.

And in the wake of Kurt Zouma's expected exit and the vacancy his departure creates in Julen Lopetegui's defence, the Hammers have updated their earlier season-long loan with obligation to buy offer with a similarly-structured but improved bid, understood to be circa £34million (€40million) plus add-ons.

Nice, who had previously accepted West Ham's earlier loan-to-buy proposition - left 'on the table' while they waited for the Italians to make an acceptable, counter offer which is yet to materialise - have indicated that they are ready to do business on the new terms.

And having reached agreement with Les Aiglons, the Hammers' intrepid Technical Director Tim Steidten is on his way to France in order to attempt to rubber-stamp a deal with Todibo, whose career path so far reads Toulouse, Barcelona - where he made just four first team starts while enjoying loans at Schalke, Benfica - and Nice, for whom he signed on a four-year contract in 2021 (an €8.5million+ €7million add-ons deal).

So confident are West Ham of reaching agreement with the 24-year-old that the club have already made provisional arrangements for travel to London for the player and his agent, ahead of a medical and the signing of contracts.

And should all that proceed without a hitch - unlikely as experience tells us that is - Todibo could be confirmed as a Hammer sometime this coming weekend.
