Julen Lopetegui's pre-match press conference ahead of Friday's night's FA Cup third round tie at Aston Villa has been cancelled.

The club confirmed early on Wednesday morning that the Spanish Head Coach, who is expecting to be fired at some point today would not now be appearing in front of the media at lunchtime as planned.

However Lopetegui was still charged with taking the first team morning training session, despite effectively being a dead man walking.

The latest embarrassment for Lopetegui came just a matter of hours after a "team bonding meal" was cancelled by the Head Coach, after learning his position was no longer tenable.

Last night Lopetegui had been due to gather his players for a morale boosting event, but the dinner was cancelled after he learned that Graham Potter was expected to succeed him.

That followed a day in which he had conducted training as usual, having informed players that he was unaware of plans to relieve him from his duties.

An announcement from the club confirming the replacement of Lopetegui with former Brighton and Chelsea boss Potter - who they hope to be in charge in time to lead the team into Friday evening's FA Cup tie at Villa Park - is expected later today.
