49-year-old Potter, who has been out of work since leaving Chelsea in April 2023 will be returning to management for a fifth time having began his journey back in 2008.

He was the manager of Northern Counties East League Division One side Leeds Carnegie from three years between 2008 and 2011 before being appointed by Swedish club Östersund, with whom he spent the next seven years building his managerial skills.

Potter was appointed manager of Östersund while the club were in the Swedish fourth division. By the time he left to take up the vacant role at Swansea City in 2018, the club were a first division staple that had won the Svenska Cupen and enjoyed Europa League football which had seen remarkable wins against clubs of Galatasary and Arsenal's stature.

After a year in Wales, Potter was on the move again having been headhunted by Brighton & Hove Albion. His first home fixture resulted in a draw against West Ham, who he never lost to during three seasons on the south coast.

Chelsea came calling for Potter in September 2022, but for the first time in his managerial career he failed to make a positive impact and he was to find himself out of work for the first time seven months later when the west London club pulled the plug and sacked his following a record that resulted in just 11 wins from 31 fixtures.

Having been out of the dugout for nearly two years, West Ham are desperately hoping Potter can repeat the kind of form that brought his such success at Östersund and Brighton.
