An attempt to get his career back on track had been under way with West Ham's former number nine having been training with Leicester City for several weeks.

However the chance of signing a potential short-term contract has gone following the news that the striker has picked up another injury during training.

Following the Foxes’ narrow 2-1 win against West Bromwich Albion on Monday, manager Marti Cifuentes confirmed the club will no longer be pursuing a deal.

"Michail had a small setback during training with us and unfortunately that means we won't proceed in the process we started,” Cifuentes said. "It's a pity because he's a great guy, a great professional.

"He's shown really good things, not only from a football perspective but from a personal perspective in the weeks he has been with us. But that changes the plan.”

Antonio, who turned down West Ham's most recent contract offer last spring now faces the prospect of having to drop further down the footballing pyramid in order to find a new club - or perhaps try his luck abroad.
