Emulating last season sets West Ham on course for safety

West Ham United may be the bookies' current favourite to take the third relegation spot behind Wolves and Burnley.
However if Nuno Santo's side manages to continue to accrue points at the same rate as last season, the good news for Hammers fans is that the team will almost certainly avoid relegation. While West Ham's current position in the Premier League looks ominous, with the Hammers 18th in the table and six points adrift of their nearest rivals above (Nottingham Forest), it is the case that the team have collected exactly the same number of points this season as from the corresponding fixtures in 2024/25.
Prior to the recent matches against Tottenham and Sunderland, West Ham were five points shy of the number of points gained during the last campaign. However the two wins - which reaped just one point between them* last season - means that the two figures are now identical.
And from West Ham's 14 remaining fixtures, the good news is that last year they accounted for a total of 23 points - which, if replicated, would almost certainly be enough to ensure West Ham remained in the top flight on 43 points come the end of the season.
The points gained/lost league table is as follows:
1 Sunderland +24 (H +20 A +4)
2 Manchester United +13 (H +9 A +4)
3 Arsenal +12 (H +6 A +6)
4 Leeds United +12 (H +11 A +1)
5 Manchester City +10 (H +6 A +4)
6 Everton +5 (H -1 A +6)
7 Bournemouth +3 (H +5 A -2)
8 Aston Villa +2 (H 0 A +2)
9 Fulham +2 (H +6 A -4)
10 West Ham United 0 (H +1 A -1)
11 Tottenham Hotspur 0 (H -8 A +8)
12 Brentford 0 (H +4 A -4)
13 Burnley -3 (H +4 A -7)
14 Brighton & Hove Albion -4 (H +1 A -5)
15 Crystal Palace -5 (H -5 A 0)
16 Chelsea -8 (H -6 A -2)
17 Nottingham Forest -16 (H -11 A -5)
18 Liverpool -16 (H -5 A -11)
19 Newcastle United -17 (H -6 A -11)
20 Wolverhampton Wanderers -17 (H -7 A -10)
On the bright side, West Ham are certainly value for money from the perspective of neutral football fans; only Bournemouth and Manchester United have averaged more goals per game (including both for and against) than the Hammers.
1 Bournemouth 3.46
2 Manchester United 3.29
3 West Ham United 3.21
4 Leeds United 3.04
5 Burnley 3.00
6 Manchester City 3.00
7 Liverpool 3.00
8 Fulham 2.88
9 Chelsea 2.88
10 Tottenham Hotspur 2.83
11 Brentford 2.79
12 Brighton & Hove Albion 2.75
13 Newcastle United 2.75
14 Arsenal 2.63
15 Aston Villa 2.54
16 Wolverhampton Wanderers 2.50
17 Nottingham Forest 2.46
18 Crystal Palace 2.25
19 Everton 2.21
20 Sunderland 2.21
* Last season's three relegated teams have been replaced by the promoted clubs for the purposes of this exercise - so the winner of the Championship replaces the team that finished 18th in the Premier League, and so on.
