Nuno Espirito Santo was naturally delighted as he witnessed his team narrow the gap between West Ham and the closest club above them, Nottingham Forest, to just three points after this afternoon's win at Burnley.
And it was a short but sweet post-match presser for Santo, who spoke about the impact his new offensive players have had, while answering questions regarding clean sheets and the in-form Crysencio Summerville...Q: Nuno, you must be absolutely delighted with that. That's three wins in four now. Does that encourage you to climb to safety now in the coming weeks?
NES: We go day by day. It was an important match for us. We need the responsibility that we had in this match and we still have. Let's go day by day. It was a good game.
Q: That first half performance - Summerville was outstanding for the first goal and played a part in the second. What can you say about that first half performance?
NES: I think we started really well. We've been starting matches really well. It's been this way for some time now, I think the team is growing and I'm really pleased the way we defended and the way we contained Burnley. If we can solve our problems in defence, we have very talented players that can help the team.
Q: I think that game at Wolves might've been a low point of the season perhaps, but how far have you come from there within the last month?
NES: I think we are improving and that is a long, long time ago. So football, it's what you do on your day. It was important for us to react from the previous match, that we started well but didn't close the game down. So today we did it, it shows improvement. But we are still in the same situation. Nothing has changed. We have to keep trying and fighting.
Q: You must be pleased with Crysencio - that's five goals in five games. He's actually on fire, isn't he?
NES: It's not only the goals, it's the work that he does and the threat that he possesses. I think it's important that our strikers score. The other day it was Callum, Pablo's helping and the goals will come.
Jarrod was fantastic again, the way he takes the ball forward. We are really pleased with our forward players. Like I said, I insist on this, this idea we have to solve the problems like we did today in our defence because up front, we can really harm teams.
Q: That's your first clean sheet!
NES: Yeah, that is fantastic!
Q: How relived are you?
NES: Yeah, it's very good, I think. Football starts from there - if we are solid, compact and do it the way we did today. With the talent that we have on the pitch, we can play good [football] and achieve [positive] results.
Q: You decided to change the 'keeper today. He was involved in the last clean sheet under the previous manager. How pleased were you with his performance and what were you thinking about the change?
NES: Mads has been working really well and waiting for his chance with patience. He's committed. They are a small group [of goalkeepers] inside of the group and they help each other. Alphonse [Areola] helped during the week before with Mads. What is important is that we, as a team, achieve the main goal. We got the clean sheet by being solid and compact.
