The opposition view: Brentford

No prizes for guessing who was at the centre of much post-match discussion in the wake of one of the worst penalties you'll ever see - and in such an important match. Hear the angst all the way from west London in the latest edition of the OV...

"It was a big game and it slightly showed, we were a little apprehensive and not as front-footed as recently as a team, maybe us as supporters too as were venturing into rarer waters, the last eight of the Cup is a marker for any club. We never really had control of the game apart from 10 minutes in the 120. For the rest of the time, it felt like we were chasing a game where Andrews talks about the importance of control, but West Ham chased us down and their ebb and flow had a little more menace. No disgrace, we lost on a spot kick and Dango joins the Trotta moment, the Jamie Bates Huddersfield side-foot, spot kick play-off moment and even the Bob Taylor open goal at Huddersfield moment of 'Do you remember when' moments that make you wince as you replay them in your head."

"Walked through the door at 12.30am, which must be a personal record for a London game. Goodness knows what time an 8pm kick-off would have resulted in. West Ham fans on the trains were generally incredulous that they’d won by us throwing it away. C’est la vie. To be fair, West Ham probably should have won the actual game on chances and overall flow. We did well on the night to come back and stay in it as long as we did. As I said at half time, there must be a reason why we haven’t won a cup since 1942. Unfortunately, no one has yet discovered it…"
- JANORAK

"We lost the game because we lost the first half. Two defensive mistakes/errors/whatever-you-want-to-call-them after an otherwise dominant performance meant we went into half-time trailing instead of WHU going into the dressing room feeling like they had to battle hard to recover. They came out with a very different game plan for the second half. We never recovered."
- jlove

"I deliberately didn't post last night as I was too angry. Waking up this morning after a disrupted journey across London resulting in me just catching the last train home by three minutes, I now realise that we have only lost a football match. There are much bigger events going on in the world right now. But, to throw away an opportunity to perhaps go to Wembley for the first time in this wonderful competition (after long away trips to Sheffield Wednesday and Macclesfield) is so frustrating and still stings like hell. It's not the only reason we are not in the quarter final, but let's be honest - you just don't take a penalty like that in that situation, you just don't."
- HMDBFC

"Upset and angry... as I'm sure many were last night.... Ouattara attempting a Panenka in an FA Cup shootout is one of the most selfish things I've ever seen by a footballer in all my years watching the game. Andrews can defend him all he likes, for me that's just PR spin. Ouattara let his teammates and supporters down with his showboating action last night... expensive mistake."
- JCMcBee

"That penalty was pathetic. If he’s practiced many times then God knows what it would have done otherwise. He’s not Pirlo, fucking smash the thing. West Ham all did and they are 90 minutes from a semi-final because of it."
- rebus

"I suspect the majority myself included are calling that penalty out for what it was. A fucking unbelievable decision to take that on in a huge cup game. There is no glory in that technique, especially after seeing the Sunderland debacle that we all laughed at. Regardless of what he did in the game before, Dango un-did all of that with that moment. Still fuming about it now. We had a huge opportunity to make a semi final with the once in a Brentford fans lifetime opportunity to reach a major cup final."
- Isleworth_Bee

"Bloke mis-kicks ball during a football match shock horror drama. It's not the end of the world, no one died, it's a game. Sometimes you win but not always. Those whining should try being bottom of Division 4 with Mike Everitt in charge."
- lythambee

"It was not only a mistake by Dango but a stupid decision that after 120 minutes of hard work we throw it away like that. I love him and will always back him, but last night was really poor."
- Max collins

"Stats suggests this was as close as a game could get. Silly penalty. Hero/zero line is thin."
- Walshie

"Dango's miss isn't what gets to me. Players mess up penalties. Who's to say if he'd gone right or left, he wouldn't have missed or had it saved? But the VAR check on Schade being fouled in their box, THAT is hard to take. It was a stone cold penalty, every single day of the week. The regulations even say it's a yellow, never mind a foul. So for the ref to not even be called to look at it? Absolute disgrace. No, that's too mild. I have been a big fan of what VAR can do but this season, it has been worse than a joke. Its poor implementation and reliance on how the operator 'feels' about the fouls they see has literally cost us points this season, and may well have cost us a QF here."
- stomalomalus

"Unfortunately last night we came up short. Some decision making by the our players and the ref made big contributions towards the result, but that is football, some you win some you lose. Fortunately for us we still have a lot to play for this season so not all bad, just frustration at missing a big opportunity. But hey we have been here before, so when we do break through it will feel even sweeter. Onwards and upwards we now need a good result against Wolves to consign this game well and truly into the archives."
- Kingston Bee

"That starting eleven was still good enough to beat West Ham. We still had a strong side. They even played a weakened team (by making six changes from their win at Fulham) for most of the game and we still couldn't beat them. That's what I find most annoying."
- BeeInSW19

"We lost a football match. It's not the first time and it won't be the last. Dango made a mistake but I don't believe for a moment it was 'showboating' and he doesn't strike me as the 'selfish' type. Still, perhaps we'd like him to be given some form of punishment in front of the crowd on Monday evening? What would be appropriate; the stocks? Tarring and feathering? Banned from the team? Any form of abuse is disgusting and there's no place for it. Dango needs our support, not our antagonism."
- snowstormbee

"If a player did that against us (as happened this season), we'd be laughing our heads off and saying 'what a twat.' I expect their fans thought the same. If he never, ever takes a penalty like that again, then he has learnt."
- Hippobee

"Dango’s cross lead to our first goal. Dango’s cross lead to our penalty. We wouldn’t have been in the match without these contributions."
- Untouchable

"2-2 after ET having gone behind twice away is respectable, I’d say. It was a good game. We played well and so did West Ham. They are a team on the up. We should have had a penalty when Schade was impeded by Fernandes but shit happens. And crucially after 120, no new major injuries. Let’s console ourselves that this result bouys the West Ham dressing room significantly, increasing their chances of survival and by extension increasing the chances of relegation for Spurs and Forest. There always an upside lads. Onto the league and finishing in a European spot."
- Wouldbee

"We looked more assured in the second half though West Ham sat back and soaked up the pressure. Two poor errors in defence cost us - seems although the collective unit is strong, too many unforced individual errors are costing us goals. Credit to West Ham, they defended and countered effectively and although we were the better footballing side Kelleher kept us in it with a handful of excellent saves."
- Balders Bee

"I thought Ouattara was pretty good. Then he hit what was possibly the worst penalty I've ever seen. Feel a bit sorry for the guy, but he should never be let near a penalty again. Ever."
- Gawain

"Oh well, at least we've got Easter off."
- WarrenBee

"West Ham got away with far too much but that is typical of a Santo team. The penalty (or two of them) that never were, I fail to see how. First, a blatant tug of Dango's shirt followed by a stamp on Schade's foot that cannot be seen by either the (so-called) referee or VAR. It beggars belief, that would have changed the course of the game and forced West Ham to go again much earlier than they did. Summerville should have walked when he pulled down Donavan because that is a yellow all day long, not that he should even have been on the pitch then as his push on Kayode was DOGSO if there ever was one! Overall I think we did enough to win it but ridiculous decisions and missed chances cost us."
- BmthBee

"Pretty entertaining game. West Ham were there to be got at, but equally were a different prospect to earlier in the season. They had some swagger and clearly have decent strength in depth. Hard to see them going down based on that."
- BFC1997

"Gutting way to go out after 120 minutes of effort. Feel sorry for Keith who put a strong team out. Need to regroup and push on with the league. Credit to West Ham as their penalties were top class."
- Cham

"A few too many people thought West Ham wouldn’t be too bothered tonight, bigger fish to fry etc, but even though they made changes most of their ‘big’ players played a significant part in the evening and you can see the confidence coursing through them, totally unrecognisable from the team we smashed 2-0 earlier in the season. Thought it was a great cup tie , two heavyweights slugging it out for two hours, chances at both ends and ending level on points literally at 2-2 but also the match stats were very even. My only gripe is why the hell wasn’t the defender sent off after fouling Kayode for the penalty?"
- shepperton bee

"Ignoring all the fallout from how we lost, I thought the improvement in West Ham's fight and organisation from our last visit was massive. Credit to Nuno because he inherited a hopeless shambles. I feel they will stay up if they keep up that standard. Forest could drop, but I'm becoming more and more convinced that Spurs won't be able to arrest their slide."
- cliffbee

"They look a little too good to go down. Let's see what Forest and Spurs thought about this evening!"
- Banana

"It’s a horrible and disappointing way to go out, especially in light of how good West Ham's penalties were. I think that accounts for a lot of the anguish, but saying that West Ham were up for the taking was a bit presumptuous. They are in good form and turns out they had the best player on the pitch on the night, and the others did pretty well too. We dominated once they sat back, deserved the equaliser and it’s a shame it came so late as if it had been 2-2 with 25 mins to go I think we’d have nicked it. Penalties are a lottery… Dango will be just as disappointed as the rest of us."
- Bee(h)Iver

"We were well off it at times tonight. We look shattered and created very little. Missed a huge chance. Not much on the bench, but our subs were odd and made us worse. Not much to cheer about but fek me, that was a turgid away end. 5k? Give me 2k at Burnley any day. Pissed off. Meh."
- Isleworth_Bee

"The West Ham penalties. Fuck me, each one got better and ended with a donkey centre half blasting it into the roof of the net FFS!"
- maddogging

"We should have had a penalty, West Ham should have had two players sent off, I didn’t see a player shirk anything tonight. Shit happens."
