West Ham United’s FA Cup win against Brentford on Monday night has been overshadowed somewhat by concerns surrounding the fitness of Crysencio Summerville.
The flying winger, who has been in red-hot form in recent weeks sparked anxiety among supporters after playing the last ten minutes with what appeared to be a calf injury, sustained during extra time at the London Stadium.Summerville had started the game on the bench with Adama Traore replacing him, but was introduced at half-time as Nuno Espirito Santo searched for attacking impetus against a well-organised Brentford side.
After making several energetic runs and helping push the Hammers forward, the Dutch winger appeared to pick up a problem in the latter stages of the match. He began to limp and required attention from the medical staff before continuing to play - because manager Santo had already used all of his available substitutions.
The sight of Summerville hobbling around the pitch caused understandable concern. He eventually left the field shortly before the penalty shoot-out and did not participate in the shootout, despite being one of the side’s regular attacking threats. West Ham went on to convert all of their penalties to win the tie 5–3, but the focus quickly shifted to the condition of the winger.
Following the match, Head Coach Santo confirmed that Summerville had suffered what initially appeared to be a “knock.” However, the Portuguese coach admitted that the injury was concerning and said the club’s medical staff would assess the player further. The winger was scheduled to undergo scans the following day to determine the extent of the damage.
"We have to assess Cry, let’s see,” Nuno explained after the match. "He felt a knock. I don’t know exactly what he has. It is concerning but hopefully we recover with this moment of joy."
And early reports from those scans have brought a mixture of relief and caution for West Ham supporters, with the results indicating that Summerville has sustained a minor calf injury rather than a recurrence of his previous hamstring problem, which kept him sidelined for a year or so shortly after his arrival at West Ham.
Club medical staff believe the injury should not keep him out for an extended period, though he is expected to miss some matches while recovering. The Premier League games against Manchester City and Aston Villa are expected to come too soon, as could the FA Cup quarter final against former club Leeds. However the club remain hopeful he will return to action by early April - assuming his rehabilitation progresses well.
The potential absence of Summerville is significant for West Ham because of the impact he has had on the team’s season. The 24-year-old has been one of the club’s standout performers, contributing crucial goals and assists during a strong run of form that helped the Hammers move to within a point of safety, having been seven points adrift at one stage.
However with scan results confirming that the issue is a relatively minor calf injury rather than a more damaging muscle strain, while Summerville may miss several upcoming matches, the prognosis suggests he should be able to return reasonably soon - offering hope to Hammers fans that he can continue to play a decisive role in West Ham’s campaign.
