The Opposition View: relegation special (matchweek 32)
- by Staff Writer
- Tuesday, 14th April 2026
From now until the rest of the season, or until they are officially out of the running, we will be bringing you a match-by-match Opposition View, chronicling the weekly angst and pain - or delight and ecstasy - from Elland Road, The City Ground and White Hart Lane.
Including West Ham United, it's a four-team battle to avoid the drop. Three will be safe, but one will fall. And while we'll continue to cover Hammers matches elsewhere as per usual in the regular Opposition View column, for this feature prepare yourselves for a smorgasbord of Spurs, a feast of Forest and a little Leeds on the side, hopefully with a delicious slice of schadenfreude come May for dessert...
Man Utd 1-2 Leeds Utd (Leeds Utd fans)
"Oh what a beautiful morning! Anyone else barely slept a wink? Taking the trash out at 5.30am and I'm still punching the air. That meant so much. What a win. We were outstanding last night, so so good. Mr. Daniel Farke!! Welled up at the sight of him on his knees at the end, he knows survival isn't done and dusted, he knows we have plenty of work still to do but that meant so much to him and us. Thank you and WELL DONE SIR! I'm absolutely made up. Have that Man U. AV IT!!!"
- wilsdenwhite
"We did well to calm it down in the end, but there was always the chance of a late equaliser. Why we couldn't have got a 3rd, 4th and then a few more?! Massive credit to Farke for the extremely attacking line-up and taking the game to them. Scoreline flattered the opposition. We could easily have gone there to park the bus, but Farke made the decisions and they paid off."
- weasel
"I just want to say what a great refereeing performance from Paul Tierney tonight! Didn't bottle it and bend over for the greedy six like most would. FWIW 'Shaddap Your Face' by Joe Dolce was number one the last time we won at Old Toilet, in 1981..."
- SG90
"Fantastic win and it was all down to me! Every time I watch the Scum on TV they win so I decided not to watch the game and - hey - it worked. Everything made much sweeter by the comments of the whinging, whining Carrick who managed to say that the Leeds goals should have been disallowed, Martinez didn't mean to pull DCL's hair as he was trying to grab his shirt (good one that) and in any event he didn't pull it hard. Get real Carrick lad, your gang of primadonnas was beaten by the better side."
- Tom the Cat
"What a win. Should have been more comfortable but it doesn't matter now, best away performance of the season. Massive, massive win. Beat Wolves on Saturday and we're almost safe."
- Chilli D
"First FA Cup semi final in my lifetime ✔ First league win at Old Toilet in my lifetime ✔ What haven't we done v Wolves in my lifetime?"
- SG90
"For the last 10 minutes, that was probably the first time since I was 10 that I wanted to hide behind the sofa. Massive, monumental and magnificent three points."
- DDB220
"I think we're safe now... I can't see Spurs getting six points more than us from hereon."
- The Subhuman
"Ah man, that was pure pain but what a result. I can barely believe it - we can’t go down now surely?"
- WhiteRose
"I have a soft spot for the Hammers, want them to survive plus they have Summerville, one of the best Leeds players last 10 years... Love him. I know Spurs have Archie, but I reckon we can buy him back if they go down..."
- The Subhuman
Nottingham Forest 1-1 Aston Villa (Nottingham Forest fans)
"Today was a good point. Yes they missed some chances, from Watkins and McGinn and also Rogers 10 yard out conversion attempt, but we had plenty of opportunities too. But what a cynical, diving bunch they are. You can tell it's Emery getting them to do it because it's right across the team, but I was so fed up of them falling over and getting free kicks whilst we got nothing. The McGinn swan dive in the Trent End. We gave them a crap own goal, scored a beauty of our own, and could have found a way to take all three points. A draw was a fair result and this could be a very valuable point as long as we now go and beat Burnley. An enjoyable afternoon by the Trent."
- andyd
"Just returned from a stormy City Ground where Forest managed to gain a valuable point despite being second best for large periods of the game against a very good Aston Villa side. I feared the worst when Murillo unfortunately turned the ball into his own net but the superb Williams levelled and the magnificent Sels aided and abetted by the rock hard Milenkovic (what a player to have in a relegation battle) meant the spoils were shared. Next week’s game against Burnley is clearly hugely important in our battle to escape the drop and we desperately need a win."
- Cloughie1975
"S’funny that after three weeks' break for some players they looked a bit rusty. To get a point playing below par was praiseworthy. We are at the business end of the season. Each point is precious!"
- Captain Sinister
"I think we did well to get a point. Watkins could and should have scored late on. His attempt on goal in the first half was flagged offside, but he wasn't. I felt our midfield was overrun and thought Dominquez should have been brought on for Hutchison at half time. The ref was crap. He clearly favoured Villa throughout. A win next Sunday v. Burnley and we're on our way to staying up... two of our future opponents - Newcastle and Chelsea - are already on the beach."
- Joe Baker's Dog
"First time in ages I've come away form the ground feeling pleased. A point against a very good side and would have taken a point all day, beat Burnley next week and that will be nine points form our last five games and leave us with five games to go to maybe find one win and a draw which would take us to 40 points, though I think 37 points will probably be enough this year."
- Beardo7
"Had a great day at the footie today other than getting fucking drowned on the walk to the ground. Bumped into loads of people I know, some of which I haven't seen in an age. No knobheads in the ground, brilliant point, Spurs lost, dropped a gallon and had a post match sing song in the pub. Top day out!"
- Wes' Organ
"McGinn is excellent as are most of that Villa midfield. If Anderson and Sangare didn’t have their best games, it’s because they’re up against a very good team who are in fourth place for a reason. Nearly everyone was saying that four points from this and the Burnley game would put us in a great position for the final run-in. We’ve done the hard part by taking a point off Villa."
- Sooty
"It was probably the most intense game I have watched since we have come back up, both sides played the same really with the speed of the game forcing errors - we had large periods of pinning them back and got into really dangerous positions. A draw was a fair result, maybe that reflects that the players didn't play as badly as made out. It was just a frantic game and overall a great watch."
- Rzar
"Jesus, Hutchinson and CHO were largely ineffective. Sangare a bit of a liability. Rest of the team did ok. Ultimately we didn't create much and Villa had enough chances to win the game. Happy with the point, all things considered."
- MaxiRobriguez
"Got to be happy with that point, Villa are a top team and they missed two sitters. Pissed off about the Lino’s offside call when Nico went through, it looked clearly onside and she should never have put her flag up. Obviously pleased that Spurs lost and we need to be on it next week as three points are a must against Burnley. Having said that, it does look like Spurs are going down. Thought the ref was very poor and missed a lot for both sides and seemed to go on Villa’s side most of the time, still we are used to shit refs, aren’t we?"
- oxonred
Sunderland 1-0 Tottenham (Tottenham fans)
"Did I miss anything? Letter sent to the Premier League: Good afternoon. Your referees all appear to referee Tottenham Hotspur s drastically different to all other teams. In this afternoon's game at Sunderland, Rob Jones has: 1. Given a drop ball to Sunderland goalkeeper instead of a Spurs corner; 2. Booked Van De Ven for a foul when he blocked off Brobbey in the first half; 3. Only have Brobbey a yellow card for a deliberate elbow to the face of Pedro Porro; 4. Not given a 2nd yellow to Brobbey despite two clear yellow card offences after his initial booking; 5. Not given Spurs a foul when the Sunderland defender blocks off Udogie in the same way that Van De Ven did to Brobbey; 6. Gave a hand ball against Muani when he was on a break away despite ball never touching his hand and
7. Permitted several fouls on Tel and other Spurs players to go unpunished. As you simply ignore posts on X, I feel that this blatant corruption needs to be pointed out and for you to actually explain these shocking decisions."
- Muttley
"Played three strikers and mustered a single shot on goal. Couldn't believe the team when I saw it. An out of sorts Bergvall and Porro's stinkers as our supposed creative outlets. The players are godawful, but De Zerbi got it wrong today."
- Slav
"Us going down is a huge revenue loss for the PL. Can’t see that they actually want us down. The fact is that we’ve been ruled by fools who doesn’t know what they’re doing. The team is shit and no manager could’ve saved these players."
- River Lea Banks 🇺🇦
"it's over and has been for a long time. I think we have to stop thinking about staying up and more about how can the club can be reinvented, because we aren't a Premier League club any more. Ownership and upper management just aren't cut out for this and if we were to luck into staying up this year, it would just be more of the same next. Burn it down and replant in the ashes is the only way forward."
- Harry Vaginola
"We might have needed this for De Zerbi. I want the psycho. I want the one who is wanting to fight players in training. I want him so pissed, he comes in tomorrow and starts throwing punches to wake these fucks up."
- AJL92113
"Utter shit. Fucking hell, it might happen."
- Barmby
"We are completely fucked if we keep playing these fucking wasters. I don’t give a shit if they are full internationals. They clearly aren’t out there for the badge. They’re all simply biding time until the WC because most are shoe-ins to make their country’s squads."
- Stateside Spur
"Kolo Muani might be the stupidest player I’ve seen in Spurs shirt. These players are dog shit. Danso I like him, but he is so shit, doesn’t know anything than pulling for shirt or making a foul. Palhinha and Sarr are what? So shit."
- CroSpurs
"Dreadful performance yet again. I'm not sure we'll ever score again yet alone win another game. I'd happily see the back of all of these players, they're all appalling."
- robotdevil
"Honestly - I am done watching this team. I have better things to be doing than watching this shit week in week out. I'll tune in next season when most of these useless pretenders will be gone."
